Dr. Georges C. Benjamin is one of the nation’s most influential physician leaders in public health and health policy. Since 2002, he has served as Chief Executive Officer of the American Public Health Association (APHA), the oldest and largest public health organization in the United States, where he leads national advocacy efforts to advance health equity, strengthen public health systems, and improve population health outcomes. Prior to joining APHA, Dr. Benjamin served as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, overseeing statewide public health and healthcare policy initiatives.
A board-certified physician trained in internal medicine, Dr. Benjamin has built a distinguished career at the intersection of clinical medicine, emergency preparedness, health policy, and public health leadership. He is widely recognized for his work in public health emergency preparedness, preventive health policy, and health system reform. Dr. Benjamin has authored more than 200 scientific articles and book chapters and continues to shape national conversations on healthcare access, accountability, and public health policy.
